The global animal welfare community is alarmed to hear that Chesterfield County law enforcement, animal control and related authorities in the state of Virginia will be executing a deaf American bulldog mix named "Polar" for allegedly killing an infant without having completed a full and proper investigation into the cause of the child's death.
According to reports, this case has NOT been sufficiently investigated. Evidence for the case is convoluted and flimsy. It is a known fact that the child was left by its parents, who were out of their home the night the death occurred. Why was the infant left unattended by this couple? Why aren't they being held accountable for their negligence? Why is the focus on a little deaf dog rather than those in charge of the welfare of their own child?
According to
examiner.com, "No one knows the details as the parents left the child unattended. The family wasn't even in the same room, nor are they reachable for comment - they left their house that evening and will not speak to the press. Polar may have been 'scruffing' the baby to move him as she would a puppy. We will never know for sure. This dog has been raised around children, and has never had a prior incident. The baby may have died from positional asphyxiation, and not from something caused by the dog. The dog's deafness is not a likely factor."
In the mean time, several responsible individuals including a pit bull rescue, a canine rehabilitation center and a police officer who owns two deaf dogs have all stepped forward to adopt Polar but have been completely cut off and denied the opportunity to rescue her.
Polar's owners refuse to comment and cannot be reached. They've left town and refuse to speak to the press. Law enforcement continues to avoid communicating with concerned citizens worried about the dog's fate and refuse to allow Polar to be rescued. WHY????????
It's painfully apparent that Chesterfield County law-enforcement and related authorities are intent on executing Polar in order to escape full disclosure. They are willfully and knowingly ignoring the pleas of concerned individuals who are begging them to spare the dog's life while a complete investigation is filed and are dishonoring attempts of responsible owners to rescue the dog and provide her with sanctuary.
In sum, breed discrimination and a lack of full transparency is driving the decision to kill this beautiful dog rather than a steadfast commitment to uphold the law.
Please be reminded: yours is the state where Michael Vick operated a dog fighting ring for years without interference. Michael Vick got a better deal than Polar, and it was PROVEN he was guilty. The same right to a full investigation was given to Casey Anthony over the death of her child. Casey Anthony got a better deal than Polar too. The same benefit and decency shoul d apply to a family pet against whom there is no solid evidence for a conviction of any kind.
This egregious miscarriage of justice must not take place!
The world is watching as you move to take the life of a dog without sufficient proof that she ever caused harm. Animal welfare organizations and concerned citizens the world over demand the truth and a full investigation. Release Polar to a rescue or responsible adopter and carry out your investigation in an honest and forthright manner.
